Tension and cautious relief now hang over Ayantunga Street and surrounding areas in Mushin as the Nigeria Police Force, Olosan Division, intensifies security operations following a disturbing surge in street crimes exposed in a recent viral report by Mushines.

The video report, which sparked widespread concern across the community, revealed how suspected miscreants had turned Ayantunga Street, Post Office axis, and adjoining routes into hotspots for nighttime robberies. Residents and passers-by were reportedly ambushed, with phones and other valuables forcefully taken, particularly during late hours.

In swift response, the police launched aggressive stop-and-search patrols across Ayantunga and other identified flashpoints within Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye and the wider Mushin area. According to sources within the division, the operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring public confidence.

Security efforts have also extended beyond routine patrols. The police, working closely with community leaders and stakeholders, initiated intelligence gathering to identify suspected perpetrators. This collaborative approach has already led to several arrests. However, in a move that underscores the complexity of the situation, many of those detained were later released after thorough screening and confirmation by community members.

A key development in the crackdown is the restriction placed on Woro Marculay—a known link road to Ayantunga reportedly exploited by fleeing suspects. Authorities have mandated that the route be closed to movement between 9:00 pm and 7:00 am, aiming to cut off escape channels and reduce nighttime criminal activity.

Despite these efforts, the operation has not been without controversy. Some residents have voiced concerns over what they describe as indiscriminate arrests, particularly of young men on the streets. They argue that such actions infringe on their freedom of movement and risk profiling innocent individuals.

While some residents appreciated the police for taking such proactive measures, sending a serious warning signal to the perpetrators to stop or face serious consequences if arrested. 

Responding to these concerns, a police source stated that the lack of clear identification of suspects necessitates proactive measures to gather intelligence, emphasising that many of the criminals operate in small groups, often blending in with regular residents before striking.

“The safety of lives and property remains our priority. These temporary measures are necessary to sanitise the area and prevent further attacks,” the source explained.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, advising against late-night movements where possible, as most reported incidents occur under the cover of darkness and report any such attack to the police as many of the victims never report the incidents

As residents grapple with balancing security enforcement and civil liberties, they hope that the ongoing operations will bring lasting peace without eroding the sense of community trust.
