On Tuesday 20 October 2020, the avoidable happened. On that fateful day, youths gathered at various areas as usual blocked major roads to host the protest peacefully with the mega protest at Agege Motor Road by Palm Avenue/ Fafolu Street roundabout, Dj playing music to entertain the youths carrying placards with different inscription, then the news of curfew by 4 pm later extended to 9 pm came in as announced by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu due to report of violence and attack on government properties and police stations in the State.
As the curfew news spread among the protesters and they are planning the way forward, around 1 pm, suddenly, gun shot was heard from the Olosan Police Station area which sent panic and fear to everybody as the cause of the shooting was unknown to people far and near, which caused protesters from different locations moved down to Olosan Police Station area to known what was going on, the shooting was relaxed a bit, then odour of tear gas filled the air and the shooting began continuously which made the area a no go area.
Mushin News on the ground at the scene covering the protest live arrived at the shooting scene and gave live coverage as the shooting was on. While covering the shooting of live bullets to the army of youths who are seen throwing stones and bottles at Olosan Police Officers, we try to gather some information on what could have led to the first gunshot because it was not yet curfew time, something must have sparked the shooting because Olosan police officers identified with the protesters, cooperating and supporting the protesters since the protest began in Mushin by making sure that it was peaceful. People alleged that the DPO of Olosan opened fire on some angry youths who were seen throwing stones and bottles at Olosan Police officers at Oando filling station by Post Office street which their intention was unknown and the police opened fire on them as the angry youths were alleged of wanted to attack and burn the police station which the police repelled by shooting to the air to disperse them but the youths were in large number to the extent of struggling with the police before firing them directly which people considered them as protesters.
As we asked more people around the area while the shooting was on, we gathered that there was a lady arrested for stabbing one guy which the police have released on bail and the people got angry that how could the police release the suspect, as the police were explaining why they released the suspect on bail, temper flared among the youth and some of them began to throw stones and bottles at the police threatening to attack and burn down the station which led to shooting to the air to disperse them and sparked great tension which caused the large army of youth to move down to the station.
The gunshot and odor of tear gas drew the attention of people from different locations to Olosan police station area with so much anger in them that Olosan police are shooting protesters and seeing different casualties coming from the area, in less than 30 minutes the whole of the police station has been surrounded by the youth, Ayantuga street, Post Office Street and Agege Motor Road leading to the station have been occupied by the youth throwing stones and bottles at the police despite the continuous shooting, the youth remained adamant against the police which led to several youths dead and injured.
As the youth continued to fight back, those that were injured were rushed to emergency rooms of LUTH and Mushin General Hospital at Oliyide which some of the victims dead on arrival, and those alive were in critical condition at Oliyide Hospital and later referred to another hospital as the hospital is not in position to remove the bullet or carry out surgical operation on such patients but those victims were given first aid treatment to stabilize them, some died before reaching the hospital while some made it.
This shooting is condemned, some people said the officers would have allowed the youth to burn the station than opening fire on them because the government will build another one, while some people said knowing full well of what Mushin youths are capable of and the news of killing police officers and burning of stations have been spread across the state, the officers have no choice than to protect themselves by repelling them, even if it was an attack on them, can't them flee from the station? Some people argued that the youth got it wrong to have gone to the station to attack the police and as the police have been surrounded, they have no choice but to shoot at their assailants because they have their life to protect as well and considering the number of families living at the barrack. Others said a rubber bullet and tear gas would have been used than a live bullet.
It was a big tragedy on that fateful day, the shooting was on till midnight and many dead bodies littered the streets around Market and Wey Street. A sad day for the people of Mushin as many loved ones were lost.
A young man named Baba Bose living along Ladipo Street, lost his life when trying to save someone who was hit by the bullet, lying in pain at Oba Fatai Aileru Palace gate along Oluwole Street. He was hit by the police bullet while trying to rescue the guy, he died on arrival at Mushin General Hospital and the injured guy survived the bullet hit but in critical condition.
The total casualties can not be ascertained but to the best of my knowledge as of Wednesday 21 October, 2020, We have 23 total cases in LUTH. 1 confirmed dead. 22 others still on treatment, 43 victims in General Hospital Oliyide, Mushin, 8 dead on arrival were many were refers to another hospital for the removal of bullets and intensive care, 3 dead body at the scene of the shooting while the figures of casualties at National Orthopedic Hospital (Gbobi) and General Hospital Isolo could not be ascertained as some victims were rushed there, even the number of dead body taken away by the police can not be ascertained.
These youths died for this struggle, they gave their lives for the struggle for freedom, the level of motivation in them was just too high, as they watched their fellow youth down, they were still regrouping to attack the police. It was a suicide mission, throwing stones and bottles at the police shooting a live bullet at them directly. I salute them, they are heroes of our time, this day will forever remain in our heart as the injury I sustained from the rebellious youths when advising them not to confront the police shooting live bullet with stones and bottles again heals, the mark will forever remain on my wrist and the irreplaceable teeth will make it a story to tell. It is truly a Black Tuesday in Mushin, we pray that God gives the family of these heroes the fortitude to bear the loss and put them in eternal rest.
