The African Women Lawyers Association of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter has hosted various women leaders in the Mushin community to begin 16-day activism toward the awareness on gender violence such as battery, rape and other forms of violence against the women as the world intensify the campaign against violence against women and girls at Mushin Local. Government Secretariat Hall.

The women lawyers gathered at Palm Avenue by GT Bank, Amu Timber market to begin the sensitisation the people on gender violence, display different encryption against gender violence and rape, walked down the road distribution flyers and talking with some Anu market women on the issue and landed at Mushin Local Government secretariat for the talk show with various women leaders from politics to market women, trade and artisans CDA women leaders and female civil servants.

The Secretary, African Women Lawyers Association, Lagos Chapter, Mrs. Obi Amaka Agah made it known that the annual event marked by international organizations to raise awareness and activities on gender violence in the world, making people know what gender violence is and why they are kicking against it with this year theme " End Gender Violence Now."

"We are starting the 16 days activism in Mushin as we move to other communities in Lagos state to speak to our women on the issue of gender violence, their right as a woman and why it should be kicked against, making sure that women are not subjected to any forms of violence." She added.

The association comprises Lawyers who own individual law firms that provide legal services to clients but as an organization of Women Lawyers Association, they give the service free of charge for women who are violated in any form either old or young ones, also mediate with the family because it is not all violation leads to court except on rape issues, reaffirming that on no ground should a woman be raped. When a woman says no it has to be respected.

Mrs. Vivian Aloba, General Secretary, Nigeria Chapter of the association,  explained that what is wrong is wrong and what is bad is bad. "There is no reason to commit a crime against your fellow human and claim. she causes it due to her choice of dress, It is wrong and we should disagree with people who hide under such excuse to commit rape". Responding to the level of indecent dressing among today's female fold which some people claimed is the cause of rape.

She added, "as a man you are expected to have self-control, no one is supporting indecent dress but it shouldn't be an excuse, it is not the cloth the lady wears, that cause most rape but it is the desire to satisfy their urge against the person and take advantage of the dress,".

The women in attendance were lectured on gender-based violence, what to do and where they can get help, that the association considers the emotional stability of the children involved which they try as much as possible to build the home because they don't encourage broken home but if there is need to intervene legally, they do.

Mushines News gathered that the rise in the number of cases we're as a result of the advocacy like this, more women and girls are talking about it and cases are gaining media attention unlike before that everything is done in family affairs and silence most of the victims, and they keep telling people who still believe that it should be a family affair that we can not build a better nation when we keep battering our mothers and rapping our girls, without letting the perpetrator face the consequence but now people are talking and are scare of doing it because the offender picture and data will be published, creating discussion and activities because there is need to discourage that act of covering violence against women.

"No one wants to break a family, am a good Christian and I want the family to grow stronger which is why we do mediation between the family members, to reconcile the difference and make the husband a better person, what we want is a better home for our mothers and girls to live and thrive." She concluded

One of the Women Leaders of APC in Mushin, Alhaja Surakat in attendance advised the women to.be vigilant of what their children are doing because most of the girls don't dress properly and attract unnecessary attention to themselves from the male counterpart which should be discouraged among our girls, that as mothers, they should frown at children who dress indecently "and knowing that men of this day are not putting themselves together, they are emotionally lost mothers should caution and be aware of what the girl child wears." She advised.

The APC Women Leader of Mushin Chapter, Mrs Muinat Mustapha also advised the women to take all the information given to them on tender violence and relate it with their fellow women in their various areas so that other women in the community can benefit from the services the association renders
