The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Calvary Zone of Lagos Province 89, Oshodi, has continued to make a positive impact in its host community by organizing a free medical outreach for residents and a street soccer tournament for youths as part of its anniversary celebration.

The event, introduced last year, has quickly gained momentum and become one that the community eagerly anticipates each year.

According to the Pastor-in-Charge, Pastor Joseph Aganbi, the parish was established in the community about 15 years ago, and the RCCG leadership mandates every parish to actively engage in Christian Social Responsibility (CSR).

“As mandated by our General Overseer, Pastor E. A. Adeboye, we are to carry out CSR — Christian Social Responsibility — in our host communities. That is what we have done. We are disciples sent to make things better, to shine our light, and to be a blessing to our community,” he said.

Pastor Aganbi described the host community as receptive and supportive, noting that residents have actively participated in both the medical outreach and the street soccer tournament. He explained that the initiative aims to encourage young people to shun social vices such as drug abuse and internet fraud (Yahoo) while discovering and nurturing their football talents.

“Who knows? Another Messi could emerge from here — we can never tell. This is just a humble beginning for them. As the Bible says, we should not despise the days of small beginnings. For these young ones, playing in a street tournament like this could be their stepping stone,” he added.

The host community, popularly known as Four Streets in Oshodi, comprises Abayomi, Ajagungbade, Ajigbotola, and Oduwusi Streets.

Mr. Adeboye Sunday, Chairman of the Abajiodu Community Development Association (CDA), described the initiative as a laudable innovation that effectively engages the host community.

“As far as I am concerned, talents have been discovered. It now depends on how we groom, brand, and expose them to the world. They are like embryos waiting to grow,” he said.

He also commended the church for its impact through the free medical outreach, which has benefited many residents. He added that the street soccer tournament, introduced last year, has brought excitement and unity to the community.

“The people don’t want it to stop. We are even seeking sponsorship so the tournament can grow bigger than we ever expected,” he concluded.
