Residents and motorists plying the Agege Motor Road outward Mushin of Odiolowo Ojuwoye LCDA have raised serious concerns over a large pothole at Challenge Bus Stop, describing it as a “death trap” and a constant source of accidents and traffic congestion.

The deep crater, which has been expanding for months, now covers a significant portion of the road, forcing vehicles to veer dangerously onto the walkway to avoid it.

Commercial drivers and tricycle operators say the bad spot has not only damaged numerous vehicles but has also caused several near-fatal accidents, as unsuspecting drivers — especially at night — plunge into the pothole without warning.

A commercial driver, Mr Wasiu Adebajo, lamented, “Every day, one vehicle or another gets stuck there. At night, you can’t even see it well unless another car’s headlight flashes. We’ve reported it several times, but nothing has been done.”

Pedestrians are also at risk, as the poor state of the road causes water to collect during rainfall, creating pools that conceal the pothole and splash muddy water on passersby.

Community leaders are calling on the Federal Government, through the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), to urgently repair the damaged portion of the road before it results in a fatal accident.

“The pothole may look small to those in offices, but it has become a daily nightmare for us in Mushin,” said Mrs Yetunde Bakare, a resident and trader in the area.

The portion of the road has been repaired so many times by FERMA, because the cause of the incessant damage is due to the blockage of the underground tunnel that links Shokunbi Street canal to Akingbola Street canal, as whenever it rains, the side of the road becomes flooded, causing the damage.

Motorists and residents alike are appealing for immediate government intervention to prevent further damage, restore smooth traffic flow, and save lives along the busy Agege Motor Road corridor.
