World-renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, was on Monday involved in a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun area of Ogun State.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred a little after 11 a.m. near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane of the highway. The convoy conveying the boxing star reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are yet to be fully determined.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was part of a two-vehicle convoy that also included a Pajero SUV carrying his security detail. At the time of the crash, four occupants were inside the Lexus vehicle.
An eyewitness who participated in the rescue effort said Joshua was seated behind the driver, alongside another passenger, while a third passenger sat beside the driver.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy — a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him, while someone else was sitting next to the driver,” the eyewitness said.
The witness further disclosed that two occupants of the Lexus with Anthony Joshua died instantly which were passengers sitting beside Joshua and the driver. while Joshua and the driver sustained injuries. Passers-by and other road users were said to have quickly mobilised to rescue victims and flag down vehicles before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene.
Emergency responders later took control of the situation as investigations into the cause of the crash commenced. Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
