Residents have been strongly reminded that indiscriminate waste disposal is no longer a minor offence but a punishable violation that could attract stiff penalties, including jail terms or fines exceeding ₦100,000.
The warning was issued by the Chairman, Dr. Seyi Jakande, who emphasized that the enforcement of environmental sanitation laws is aimed at safeguarding public health and restoring the dignity of the community.
“Our streets are not dumping grounds,” Dr. Jakande declared. “Anyone caught littering or disposing of waste indiscriminately risks prosecution, which may result in imprisonment or fines of over ₦100,000. This is not just about punishment; it is about responsibility.”
He stressed that beyond the legal implications, careless waste disposal directly impacts the environment, public safety, and the well-being of future generations.
“Every sachet of water, every plastic bottle, and every scrap of paper thrown carelessly blocks our drainage systems, causes flooding, and exposes us to health hazards,” he added. “We must think about our children and the kind of community we are leaving behind.”
The Chairman outlined practical steps residents must adopt to maintain a cleaner environment. These include refraining from littering, avoiding the disposal of paper waste on roads, and properly managing plastic bottles and pure water sachets. He also encouraged residents to dispose of waste responsibly, promote cleanliness among neighbors, and instill environmental consciousness in younger generations.
Community members have begun reacting positively to the directive. A local trader, Mrs. Bose Adeyemi, welcomed the development, saying, “We all complain about dirty streets and flooding, but change starts with us. If enforcement is what it takes, then so be it.”
Dr. Jakande reiterated that his vision is simple but firm: “A cleaner, safer, and more beautiful community is possible if we all play our part. Let us rise to this challenge together.”
With stricter enforcement now in place, residents are urged to comply and contribute actively to building an environment they can all be proud of.
