A routine Monday morning turned tragic at the busy Badagry Roundabout in Lagos as a cement-laden truck reportedly lost control, killing a traffic officer and two commercial motorcyclists in a devastating crash that has left the community in mourning.

The fatal incident occurred at about 9:45 a.m., when the truck veered off course while approaching the junction, ramming into the victims and sending bystanders scrambling for safety.

The deceased include an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who was on active duty, and two commercial motorcyclists waiting to pick up passengers at the roadside.

An official of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking.

“The truck hit the LASTMA staff on official duty and two cyclists waiting to carry passengers,” the official said.

“The driver tried to manoeuvre to reduce casualties; otherwise many more motorcyclists and vehicles would have been affected.”

Confirming the incident, Mr. Yusuf Sanni, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said the truck driver had been arrested and taken into custody.

“The driver has been taken to Badagry Police Station,” Sanni stated, attributing the crash to loss of control. He urged motorists to avoid the area while authorities cleared the wreckage.

According to officials, the remains of the victims were deposited at a hospital mortuary, while the truck was impounded at the police station for further investigation.

CSP Folajimi Agosile, Divisional Police Officer at the Nigeria Police Force Badagry Division, confirmed that the driver remains in detention pending prosecution.

“He will be arraigned at the Chief Magistrates’ Court after investigations are concluded,” Agosile said.

Emergency responders from the FRSC, LASTMA, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the police swiftly moved in to clear the expressway and restore order, preventing further disruption to traffic along the busy corridor.

Residents and commuters have since called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations for heavy-duty vehicles, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by reckless or poorly controlled trucks on Lagos roads.

As investigations continue, the tragedy stands as yet another sobering chapter in the ongoing battle for safer highways in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
