The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has taken a bold step into the future with the official launch of its drone operations, ushering in a new era of digital intelligence for traffic management, security surveillance, and public safety across the metropolis.
In a press release, Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, said this groundbreaking initiative is fully aligned with the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu under the THEMES+ Agenda, marking the Authority’s transition from traditional analogue methods to advanced, technology-driven solutions designed to improve urban mobility, enhance safety, and deliver operational excellence.
With high-definition aerial reconnaissance and real-time monitoring capabilities, the drones will empower LASTMA to proactively manage traffic, ensure quicker interventions, curb road mishaps, and reinforce a disciplined motoring culture in Lagos.
Speaking at the launch, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deployment as a “watershed moment” in Lagos’ traffic management ecosystem.
He stated: “This transition is not just about acquiring new equipment; it is a strategic reform that places LASTMA at the forefront of digital governance in traffic management. These drones will provide real-time aerial oversight, enabling swifter interventions, improved safety outcomes, stronger emergency response coordination, and more secure traffic operations.”
He also assured Lagosians that the operations will strictly adhere to privacy safeguards, ethical standards, and regulatory compliance to maintain public trust.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to innovation in traffic management, with a focus on reducing travel times, saving lives, and protecting property.
