In the spirit of the yuletide season, the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Hon. Tunbosun Haruna Aruwe, on Tuesday presented the fourth-quarter Senior Citizens Welfare Package to elderly residents at the council Secretariat. The programme, which also doubled as a Christmas celebration, brought together hundreds of senior citizens from across the local government area.

Dressed in colourful Ankara aso-ebi specially supplied by the council, the beneficiaries received food items including bag of rice, garri, semolina, tuber of yam and salt, in addition to the regular quarterly financial stipend of ₦10,000. The initiative forms part of the council’s continuous welfare support for elderly residents, aimed at easing their economic burden, especially during the festive period.

In addition to the welfare package, the council organized free medical services for the senior citizens. The health outreach included general medical check-ups, free drugs dispensed to beneficiaries, as well as free eye tests with prescription eyeglasses provided to those in need. The exercise was aimed at improving the overall health and well-being of the elderly, many of whom have limited access to regular medical care.

Speaking with Mushines, Hon. Aruwe said the welfare and health of senior citizens remain a top priority of his administration. “Our elderly citizens laid the foundation for the Mushin we enjoy today, and it is our responsibility to ensure they are not forgotten,” he said. “This yuletide package, alongside the medical and eye care services, is about showing love, appreciation and ensuring our senior citizens celebrate the season in good health, dignity and joy.”

The council chairman further assured residents that the programme would remain consistent and inclusive. “As a government closest to the people, we will continue to design policies and programmes that directly impact lives, particularly the most vulnerable in our community,” Aruwe added.

Also speaking, Hon. Dele Abioye, the Leader of the legislative Council welcomed the elders and assured them of continued good governance, "we have resolved to always give our best to the people of Mushin and we will not relent in doing that which has evidenced in our progress made so far since assumed office," he said.

Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the council for the gesture. Madam Abosede Adeyemi described the intervention as timely. “This package and the free medical care mean a lot to us, especially now that food and healthcare are expensive. The drugs and eyeglasses will really help,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Pa Sulaimon Lawal, commended the chairman for prioritizing senior citizens. “Many of us depend on this quarterly support. The health check and eye test show that the chairman truly cares about us. We pray God will bless him to do more for Mushin,” he stated.

The event ended with songs, prayers and goodwill messages, as the senior citizens applauded the council leadership for sustaining the welfare and health initiative and ensuring a memorable yuletide celebration for elderly residents in Mushin Local Government.
