The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed two fatal accidents that occurred in the early hours of Monday, leaving two people dead and two others severely injured in different parts of the state.

According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the first crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Otedola Bridge inward Berger, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

An unregistered vehicle, carrying two occupants, reportedly collided at high speed with a moving, heavily loaded trailer, both occupants died instantly from the impact. The trailer driver allegedly fled the scene with the articulated truck before emergency responders arrived.

LASTMA’s 24-hour Night-Gang Team quickly cleared the wreckage and removed the bodies from the road to prevent further incidents. Officers from the Isheri Police Division secured the area, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) evacuated the remains.

A second accident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Third Mainland Bridge, near the UNILAG waterfront inward Lagos Island. The crash involved an empty tanker and a pure-water distribution van (SMK 67 XH).

Two occupants sustained serious injuries and were stabilised by LASAMBUS before being taken to a nearby hospital.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the fatalities as avoidable tragedies caused by reckless speeding and disregard for traffic laws.


He noted that enforcing speed limits remains crucial to saving lives and praised the rapid response of LASTMA’s night operations team.
