The Ojuwoye community in Mushin has launched a major fundraising campaign to reconstruct one of its oldest and most symbolic places of worship, the Oluhunishola Sunnah Mosque, located on Dada Iyalode Street.
Community leaders, political figures, and residents of Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA gathered on Thursday, December 4, 2025, to raise funds and show support for the transformation of the decades-old mosque into a modern worship centre capable of accommodating more faithful.
The event drew notable dignitaries, including Distinguished Senator Ganiyu Olarewaju Solomon; the Apex Leader in Mushin and Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya; Member, Lagos State House of Assembly (Mushin Constituency I), immediate past Chairman of the LCDA, Hon Rasaq Ayala and several other community leaders, religious figures, and well-wishers were also in attendance.
According to members of the Giwa family, descendants of the late Giwa who spearheaded the establishment of the mosque in the early 1950s, the Oluhunishola Sunnah Mosque is widely regarded as the oldest mosque in the Ojuwoye axis. They revealed that their father donated the land for its construction, while early community members contributed building materials to support the development.
In honour of this legacy, the organising committee and community stakeholders agreed unanimously that the reconstructed structure would bear the name Giwa Sunnah Mosque, immortalising the mosque's founding family.
The guest lecturer, Imam Yunus Olushina, delivered a sermon titled “Spending in the Cause of Allah.” He reminded attendees that contributing to a project that expands access to worship is one of the most rewarding forms of charity. He urged individuals, organisations, and well-meaning Mushin indigenes, both at home and abroad to support the rebuilding effort.
The mosque’s reconstruction has already reached the lintel stage, but more financial and material support is required to complete the project.
Donations poured in from dignitaries and community members during the event. The organisers have extended an open call for further contributions to ensure the timely completion of the new mosque structure, designed to better serve the large Muslim population within the bustling Ojuwoye Market environment.
Community members and supporters willing to contribute may donate through the following account:
Account Name: OLOHUNISHOLA SUNNAH MOSQUE PROJECT
Account Number: 0510852239
Bank: Sterling Bank
The Ojuwoye community expressed optimism that the collective effort will soon deliver a modern, befitting house of worship that honours its history and strengthens unity among Muslim faithful.
