Residents and LASTMA officials rescuing victims from the scene to hospital

Panic and grief enveloped the Meiran axis of Lagos on Wednesday following a fatal road crash involving a Silo Mixer Truck and multiple vehicles near the Meiran Primary Health Centre.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the crash resulted in the death of two persons, while three others sustained critical injuries. The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an official statement issued in Lagos.

According to Bakare-Oki, the tragic incident occurred at Iyana Meiran inward Meiran Road, close to the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Meiran. He noted that the driver of the Dangote Silo Mixer Truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, abandoning victims and damaged vehicles.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck, allegedly moving at high speed, experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The out-of-control vehicle slammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly known as Korope (EPP 541 YF), and four tricycles (Marwa) with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN and EKY 122 QP.

The force of the collision caused severe damage, leaving commuters trapped inside crushed vehicles and twisted wreckage. LASTMA officials were immediately deployed to the scene and, with the support of concerned residents, rescued three critically injured victims from the wreckage.

To prevent further accidents, the authority cordoned off the affected corridor and implemented traffic diversion and control measures. Security operatives from the Meiran Police Division were also alerted, with the Divisional Police Officer leading officers to the scene to provide security during rescue and recovery operations.

The injured victims were rushed to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the two deceased persons were handed over to the Nigeria Police for evacuation by ambulance.

Bakare-Oki warned motorists to comply strictly with government-approved speed limits, emphasizing that speeding and poor vehicle maintenance remain leading but preventable causes of fatal road crashes. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a swift and complete recovery.
