Residents across Lagos are set to experience restricted movement on Saturday, April 25, 2026, as the state government reintroduces its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, aimed at promoting cleanliness and reducing environmental hazards.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed that the exercise will now hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. During this period, movement will be controlled to enable residents clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage systems effectively.
According to the commissioner, enforcement teams comprising officials from key agencies, including the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Kick Against Indiscipline, and the Lagos Waste Management Authority, alongside local government sanitation inspectors, will be deployed across communities to monitor compliance.
He warned that residents who fail to comply with the directive would face sanctions in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. To support the exercise, LAWMA trucks will be deployed to evacuate waste generated during the sanitation period.
Wahab also revealed that the government will introduce incentives, including rewards for the cleanest Local Government Area (LGA), Local Council Development Area (LCDA), and streets, to encourage active community participation and foster healthy competition.
The initiative follows a symbolic flag-off exercise held along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road on March 14, ahead of the full implementation scheduled for this month.
The reintroduction of the sanitation programme comes nearly a decade after it was suspended in November 2016 due to legal concerns surrounding movement restrictions during the exercise.
While many residents have welcomed the move as a proactive step towards curbing indiscriminate waste disposal and reducing flooding, others have expressed concerns about the enforcement process. Some community members have cautioned against potential abuse of movement restrictions and emphasized the need for sustained public enlightenment on proper waste management practices.
The state government, however, has called for cooperation from all residents, urging them to take ownership of their environment and contribute to building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.
