At least 45 Umrah pilgrims have been confirmed dead in a tragic road accident in Saudi Arabia after a bus conveying worshippers from Makkah to Madinah collided with a fuel tanker and went up in flames.

The fatal crash, which occurred along a major highway used frequently by pilgrims, resulted in an intense blaze that engulfed the vehicle almost immediately, leaving rescuers with limited time to save passengers trapped inside. Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical teams, were deployed to the scene, but authorities said many victims were already beyond help due to the severity of the fire.

Saudi officials have described the accident as one of the deadliest involving Umrah pilgrims in recent years. The government has also disclosed the countries of origin of the martyrs it was gatherrd that about 40 Indian nationals were identified with other nationals as part of ongoing efforts to notify families and consulates. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collision, including whether mechanical failure or road conditions played a role.

Local authorities have extended condolences to families of the victims and assured that identification processes, repatriation arrangements, and support services are being handled with “utmost urgency and respect.

The deadly crash has sparked renewed calls for tighter safety measures on key pilgrimage routes, particularly during peak seasons when thousands of faithful travel between the holy cities.
