The Mushin Local Government has officially unveiled the Aruwe Under-15 Champions Cup, a grassroots football competition designed to discover and nurture young football talents across the 10 political wards in the council area

The unveiling ceremony, held at the Mushin Local Government Council Secretariat Hall during a media parley, attracted council officials and key stakeholders in grassroots football in Mushin. Present at the event were the Chairman, Hon. Olatunbosun Haruna Arise, Vice-Chairman, Hon. Semiu Ishola Karaole, the Secretary to the Local Government, Councillors, supervisors, special advisers and other executive members of the council, as well as representatives of the Mushin Football Coaches Council and the Referees Association, who pledged to provide technical support for the successful organisation of the tournament.

The Aruwe Under-15 Champions Cup is a field eight-a-side football tournament exclusively for players under the age of 15. Each of the 10 wards in Mushin Local Government will present a team, with the respective ward councillors serving as managers. 

Speaking at the unveiling, the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Hon. Tunbosun Aruwe, described the championship as a strategic investment in the future of children and youths in the community. He said the initiative reflects his administration's commitment to using sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, talent discovery and community development.

According to him, the competition goes beyond winning trophies, as it is designed to provide young footballers with a platform to showcase their talents, build confidence, develop discipline and attract the attention of football scouts and academies.

"The future belongs to our children. This championship is another demonstration of our commitment to creating opportunities for them to excel through sports. We believe Mushin is blessed with enormous football talents, and this tournament will help expose them while fostering unity across our communities," Aruwe stated.

One of the major highlights of the unveiling was the official draw for the tournament, where the 10 participating wards were paired for the preliminary round.

The opening fixture is scheduled for July 15, with Ward A taking on Ward J, followed by other preliminary matches. The competition will then progress into the knockout stages, culminating in the grand finale on July 31, when the inaugural champions of the Aruwe Under-15 Champions Cup will be crowned.

Also speaking, the Supervisor for Youth and Sports, Hon. Afeez Baruwa, commended Chairman Aruwe for taking grassroots football in Mushin to a new level.

He described the tournament as one of the biggest youth development initiatives introduced by the current administration, noting that it would promote unity among residents while giving young footballers a rare opportunity to discover and develop their talents.

"I appreciate our Executive Chairman, Hon. Tunbosun Aruwe, for taking this tournament to a new and higher level of participation. Our expectation is to see communities coming together to support each other and watch the matches. Beyond the competition, this championship will provide a great platform for our youths to discover themselves, build confidence and pursue their dreams in football," Baruwa said.

Officials of the Mushin Football Coaches Council and the Referees Association also expressed their readiness to ensure the tournament is conducted professionally, promising fair officiating and quality technical guidance throughout the competition.
