Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, reportedly collapsed during the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Abuja on Thursday after police allegedly fired tear gas to disperse protesters.

In a video circulating online, security operatives were seen deploying tear gas at the protest ground as demonstrators scampered for safety amid the confusion. Protesters were seen running for shelter while panic spread across the area.

Amid the commotion, Sowore was reportedly seen lying on the ground, having appeared to faint. Concerned supporters and fellow protesters quickly surrounded him before he was assisted into a vehicle and reportedly taken away for emergency medical attention.

The circumstances surrounding his collapse and his current health condition were not immediately clear at the time of filing this report.

The June 12 protest drew activists and civil society groups demanding better governance, accountability, and improved living conditions in the country. Meanwhile, authorities have yet to officially comment on both the reported collapse and the alleged use of tear gas at the protest venue.
