Late Kelechi Nwaba |
A man identified as Kelechi Nwaba living at 12 Oduntan Street, Mushin, has reportedly died due to the negligence of a security gate man of the street.
According to residents of the street, the sad incident happened at wee hours of today, Friday, 29 August 2025, when the deceased suddenly developed an emergency medical condition and he was rushed into a car to be taken to the hospital.
On getting to the gate of the street which has been locked by the gate man, as the car's driver honked repeatedly for about an hour waiting for the gateman to come out to open the gate, the man gave up the ghost.
Angrily, Baba Samuel, as he's popularly called in the Street, said, " This has been happening several times, the gateman always gets drunk at night after locking the gate, an emergency will happen, the gateman is nowhere to be found, and we say we have a CDA coordinating the area, this is terrible.
"The man would not have died if the gate had been open on time. " He said
Other residents lamented how the security guard is causing people to die from preventable deaths due to his negligence on duty.
"We have CDA leaders who collect money for the security man's salary, and they found nothing to do about it, and we can't continue to keep the gate locked when there is no responsible security guard, the gate has to he removed. " He said.
The gate in question is between Ofada (GRA) Street and Odutan Street. The security is not on the side of Oduntsn Street, and each time there is an emergency, the security is nowhere to be found, and the resident angrily removed one side of the gate to avoid the recurrence of the ugly incident.
This is a call to the CDA members to make sure that every gate locked must have a gateman or someone in charge of the security/ gate key.
Also, the security personnel and the local government need to emphasise background checks on security guards and gatemen. This is one of the reasons the State government is not in support of multiple gates on the streets of Lagos because of the negligence of the security guards.
It is sad to gather that about four people have passed away due to that negligence.
