The annual soccer tournament hosted by Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA, tagged Odi-Olowo Chairman’s Cup, climaxed on Wednesday, 3 September, 202 with, the grand finale of its 5th edition at the Jide Sanwo-Olu Sports Arena, Ilupeju Secondary School, Ilupeju.

Champions emerged across all categories, while the novelty match between political office holders and management staff of the Council saw the Council Chairman, Hon. Seyi Jakande, clinch the Man of the Match award.

Speaking at the final match, Hon. Jakande noted that the tournament reflects the continuity of governance, as it was initiated by his immediate predecessor, Hon. Rasaq Olushola Ajala.

“I am happy to see the end of season 5 of this tournament coming to an end, as we promised to sustain many of the impactful programmes initiated in the past eight years by my predecessor,” he said.

Highlighting the impact of the tournament since its inception, Jakande explained that the benefits have been enormous. He recalled that in the past, matches were played outside the council’s constituency due to a lack of facilities, but now, the LCDA boasts its own stadium, with another one underway to further boost football development.

He also noted that players have gained exposure through both international and local league trials, citing the recent victory of the Ghetto Tigers at the Gothia Cup in Sweden this year.

“The tournament has been successful every year, and we will continue to improve on it,” he added.

In the U-17 category, Olaitan Ibrahim, who scored the lone goal for Starlight FC against Future Stars 99, thanked God for their hard-fought victory. He appreciated the exposure the competition has given them but urged organisers to improve officiating in future editions.

The Best Female Goalkeeper of the tournament, Shoneye Oluwaferan of Ghetto Tigers FC, expressed delight at her award, describing the tournament as a great platform for upcoming professional players to hone their skills.

“This tournament is a stepping stone for all of us to gain more exposure. I am proud that we won, and I promise to always make our sponsor, Hon. Rasaq Olushola Ajala, proud. I also thank Hon. Seyi Jakande, the new chairman, for sustaining this great initiative,” she said.
