The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has issued a stern warning to transport unions and associations over the unauthorized use of so-called “Union Stickers” as substitutes for proper vehicle registration in Lagos.
In a press release by Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Mr. Bakare-Oki described the practice as a serious breach of traffic laws, a security risk, and an attempt to undermine the authority of government agencies responsible for vehicle documentation and regulation.
He noted that the use of such stickers not only threatens the security architecture of the state but also obstructs effective law enforcement and compromises public safety.
“Every vehicle in Lagos must be duly registered with constitutionally empowered agencies. Union stickers or any unauthorized insignia cannot replace legitimate number plates. Any vehicle caught with such illegal identifiers will be impounded, and offenders will face full sanctions under the law,” the GM warned.
To curb the practice, LASTMA, in collaboration with security agencies and other enforcement bodies, will intensify surveillance on major roads and transport corridors across the state. The agency vowed that defaulters would not escape the full weight of the law.
Bakare-Oki appealed to members of transport unions to comply with lawful registration requirements, stressing that adherence was not only about administrative orderliness but also about safeguarding the lives and property of Lagos residents.
He further assured the motoring public that the Lagos State Government is determined to sanitize the transport sector through sustained enforcement measures that would strengthen security, improve traffic management, and protect the welfare of all road users.
