Undefeated Nigerian lightweights Taiwo “Esepo” Agbaje and Tosin “Sojar Boy” Osaigbovo are poised for a high-stakes showdown as they battle for the vacant WBA Africa Lightweight title on April 5 at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
According to PUNCH Sports Extra, the 10-round clash, promoted by De Lad’s Boxing and sanctioned by the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control is already generating intense buzz among boxing enthusiasts, with many describing it as one of the most compelling domestic matchups in recent years.
Agbaje, born and bred in Mushin, is an international boxer who enters the bout with an intimidating record of 18 wins, zero losses, and 13 knockouts. Known for his explosive power, “Esepo” says his street-earned nickname reflects his relentless fighting style.
“Right from when I was young, I used to win by knockouts, and that’s when they started hailing me on the streets as ‘Esepo’. Nobody can stop me, nobody can take my punches and survive,” Agbaje declared confidently.
The hard-hitting lightweight boasts notable achievements, including winning the WBF Intercontinental Featherweight title at GOtv Boxing Night 27, where he also clinched the N1.5m Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy as the event’s best boxer. He has since claimed the trophy four times—an accomplishment he believes has sharpened his winning mentality.
Standing across the ring will be Osaigbovo, unbeaten in 12 fights with eight knockouts. The confident contender sparked the rivalry months ago when he publicly challenged Agbaje on social media.
“Every single fight and step in the ring is a statement for me. It’s war. I prepare for everything they bring, and this is no different. I belong there and deserve these unification fights… Who’s next?” Osaigbovo posted at the time.
While some fans warned him against facing Agbaje, the outspoken fighter now has the platform to prove his doubters wrong in what promises to be a defining night of his career.
President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Rafiu Oladipo, praised the matchup, describing it as a testament to Nigeria’s growing strength in the lightweight division.
“This is exactly the kind of fight Nigerian boxing deserves. Two unbeaten fighters, both hungry and talented, are going after a continental title on home soil. We are proud to sanction this bout, and we expect a spectacular night of boxing,” Oladipo said.
The board’s Secretary General, Remi Aboderin, assured fans of strict adherence to professional standards.
“The NBBofC will ensure that everything is in place for this fight to be conducted with the integrity and professionalism the title demands. Both fighters have earned this opportunity, and we wish them well,” Aboderin stated.
With a combined record of 30 victories and 21 knockouts, and neither man having tasted defeat, Lagos is set for an explosive encounter on April 5. When the final bell rings inside the National Stadium, only one fighter will remain unbeaten—and claim continental supremacy.
