Political activities have reached fever pitch across Mushin following the postponement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election to May 16, with aspirants intensifying lobbying, grassroots consultations and strategic alliances in a fierce battle for party tickets ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC National Working Committee had earlier announced the postponement of the House of Representatives primaries from Friday, May 15 to Saturday, May 16, 2026. According to the revised timetable released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, Senate primaries are scheduled for Monday, May 18, State House of Assembly primaries for Wednesday, May 20, Governorship primaries for Thursday, May 21, while the Presidential primary will hold on Saturday, May 23.
The postponement has further heightened political tension within Mushin Constituencies I and II, where aspirants contesting for the House of Representatives and Lagos State House of Assembly seats are reportedly using the extra time to consolidate support among party faithful and influential grassroots leaders.
Across Mushin, political meetings, consultations and strategic gatherings have become more frequent as aspirants move aggressively seeking endorsements from APC executives, community stakeholders, youth groups, market leaders, women associations and loyal party members expected to participate in the direct primaries.
Party insiders described the coming APC exercise as one of the most competitive primary elections in recent years, largely because the adoption of the direct primary system has shifted political power closer to ordinary party members at the ward level.
In Mushin Federal Constituency II, the race for the House of Representatives ticket has become particularly intense, with Lagos APC Spokesman, Hon. Seye Oladejo, emerging as one of the major contenders challenging incumbent lawmaker, Hon.Toyin Fayinka. Oladejo has continued consultations with party leaders and grassroots stakeholders across the constituency, promising quality representation and improved grassroots development if elected.
Supporters of incumbent lawmakers have also intensified mobilization efforts, insisting that experience and continuity should be rewarded at the primaries. This has resulted in heightened political calculations and alignments among various blocs within the party structure.
In Mushin Constituency I, the battle for the APC House of Representatives ticket is equally generating strong attention as incumbent lawmaker Adeyemi Alli reportedly faces competition from aspirants including Hon. Adeleke Opeodu and Hon. Madina Sanusi. Sources within the party disclosed that aspirants have intensified outreach in a bid to secure strategic backing before the primary election.
The Lagos State House of Assembly contests are also witnessing growing competition. In Mushin Constituency II, incumbent legislator Hon. Yinka Kazeem is believed to be consolidating support among ward leaders and party loyalists as he seeks another term in office. Political observers within the constituency said his grassroots network and long-standing relationship with party mobilisers may play a significant role during the primaries against his contenders like
Meanwhile, in Mushin Constituency I, the incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya seeking reelection has continued consultations with residents and party stakeholders, canvassing support on the basis of experience, and his unprecedented achievements in grassroots governance, youth empowerment and community development. The likes of Hon. Adedeji Owoeye, Hon Bimbo Obakoya, Hon. Tunde Fabiyi and Hon Saheed Mabiunori are challenging the incumbent urging party members to support aspirants with strong grassroots connection and accessible leadership style.
Findings revealed that many aspirants have adopted aggressive lobbying strategies ahead of the primaries. Apart from meetings with party executives and local stakeholders, several contenders are said to be engaging influential members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), political associates and community development groups in last-minute negotiations aimed at securing endorsements.
Campaign posters, branded vehicles, banners and mobilization materials have also flooded major areas in Mushin including Idi-Oro, Ojuwoye, Ilupeju, Palm Avenue, Ilasamaja and parts of Mushin Market, reflecting the growing intensity of the contest.
A senior APC chieftain in Mushin, who spoke anonymously, said the direct primary arrangement has made the race more unpredictable because aspirants now depend heavily on grassroots acceptance rather than elite endorsements alone.
“There is serious lobbying everywhere now because every aspirant understands that ordinary party members will determine the outcome. Meetings are taking place daily and alliances are changing very fast,” the source said.
Political analysts believe the outcome of the APC primaries in Mushin may significantly shape the political direction of the constituency ahead of the 2027 elections, considering the strategic importance of Mushin in Lagos grassroots politics and the dominance of the ruling party in the state.
