The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has cautioned aspirants contesting under the platform of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections to avoid acts capable of disrupting the party’s primary elections, warning that violators would face suspension and other disciplinary actions.
Yilwatda gave the warning in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, following growing tension and exchanges among some aspirants ahead of the APC primaries scheduled to commence later this month.
According to the party chairman, the APC remains committed to conducting transparent, peaceful, and credible primary elections that would strengthen internal democracy and sustain public confidence in the party. He stressed that the leadership of the party would not tolerate any act capable of undermining the integrity of the process.
The APC primaries are expected to begin with the House of Representatives election on May 15, followed by the Senate on May 18, state Houses of Assembly on May 20, governorship on May 21, and the presidential primary on May 23.
Yilwatda warned that any aspirant or supporter found instigating violence, sponsoring unrest, engaging in anti-party activities, or attempting to disrupt the exercise would be sanctioned accordingly.
“Any aspirant or supporter found instigating violence, sponsoring unrest, engaging in anti-party activities, or attempting to undermine the integrity of the process would face severe disciplinary measures, including immediate suspension from the party,” the statement read.
He urged aspirants to approach the contest with maturity, patriotism, and sportsmanship, noting that only one candidate would eventually emerge victorious in each category.
“In every democratic contest, only one person will emerge victorious. What is important is the spirit with which the process is approached. I urge all aspirants to embrace the outcome of the primaries in the overall interest of the party and our democracy,” Yilwatda stated.
The APC national chairman further reminded all aspirants that they are ambassadors of the party, adding that their conduct before, during, and after the primaries would reflect the values, discipline, and vision of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
