The Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress has officially declared Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election following a sweeping victory in the party’s primary election held on Thursday, 21 May 2026.
The primary, conducted at the APC State Secretariat in Acme, Ogba, was described by party officials as peaceful and transparent, with key stakeholders and party faithful in attendance. Chairman of the APC National Governorship Election Committee, Gen. Jon Temlong, announced the results before a gathering that included Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Distinguished Senator Ganiyu Solomon, Deputy Governor Femi Pedro, local government chairmen, members of the Lagos State Executive Council, lawmakers, and other party members.
According to the electoral committee, Hamzat secured an overwhelming 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes cast, while his closest challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, polled one vote. Another aspirant, Samuel Ajose, had earlier withdrawn from the race before the commencement of voting.
Declaring the outcome, Temlong affirmed that Hamzat had fulfilled the constitutional requirements and party guidelines to emerge as the APC standard bearer for the 2027 governorship contest in Lagos State.
In his acceptance speech, Hamzat expressed gratitude to party leaders and supporters, particularly Governor Sanwo-Olu, for their support and contributions to the growth of the party and the state. He also acknowledged members of the National Assembly, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and the electoral committee, while appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership.
“With humility, I accept the candidacy of the APC in the upcoming 2027 elections,” Hamzat said, pledging commitment to the party’s vision ahead of the gubernatorial contest.
