Motorists, residents and commuters along the ever-busy Agege Motor Road have expressed relief following the commencement of repairs on some of the road’s most damaged portions by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC).

The ongoing repair work, which began from the stretch around CON Oil after Zenith Bank inward Mushin, is aimed at easing the suffering of thousands of road users who have endured severe traffic congestion, vehicle breakdowns and difficult commuting conditions caused by the deplorable state of the road.

Mushin News gathered that the repair was facilitated by Dr Oyeyemi Ayoola, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Central Internal Audit.

Presently, the Idi-Oro to Olosha failed portion has been repaired with interlocking bricks. The work was neatly executed without defects, making the road motorable and flood-free. Commuters, motorists and residents have since expressed great relief following the completion of the section.

Following the completion of the Idi-Oro inward Olosha section, the LSPWC has commenced repairs on the failed portion at Ladipo Junction inward Mushin Market along Agege Motor Road. Work, which began on Thursday, started with the excavation and removal of the asphalt surface and, as of the time of filing this report, had progressed to the laying of interlocking bricks.

Mushin News also gathered that the repair work at Ladipo Junction is being facilitated by the Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Hon. Olatunbosun Haruna Aruwe, as part of efforts to complement his administration’s aggressive road infrastructure projects within the community.

According to officials of the LSPWC, the current phase of the repair involves the use of interlocking bricks instead of the asphalt previously used on the road. They explained that the interlocking system is expected to provide stronger and more durable support for the heavily used route, especially during the rainy season.

For months, commuters and transport operators along the axis have lamented the worsening condition of the road, which often resulted in gridlock stretching across Mushin and adjoining communities. Commercial bus drivers said the failed portions of the road increased the cost of vehicle maintenance, damaged tyres and suspension systems, and slowed down business activities in the area.

A commercial driver, who identified himself simply as Kunle, described the intervention as a welcome development.

“We have suffered on this road for too long. Sometimes passengers spend hours on a journey that should take minutes because vehicles struggle to pass through the bad portions. This repair is bringing relief to everyone,” he said.

Commuters appealed to the government to sustain regular maintenance of the road to prevent the repaired portions from deteriorating again, noting that this is not the first time such repairs have been carried out.

“I want to appeal to the government to constantly maintain this road because most times, after repairs are done, small potholes begin to appear within a year and gradually become bigger. With a constant maintenance culture, the road will last longer and further deterioration can be prevented,” a commuter said.

The Chairman of Owode CDA at Idi-Oro, Mr Kolawole Melanie, said residents are delighted to witness the completion of the Olosha failed portion of Agege Motor Road and appealed to the government to extend the ongoing repairs to Moshalashi Bus Stop inward Mushin, Challenge Bus Stop, and other damaged portions of the road.

He linked the rapid deterioration of roads in the area to poor drainage systems and indiscriminate waste disposal, warning that blocked drainage channels caused by dumped refuse often weaken road structures and contribute to flooding during rainfall.

He also appealed to the government to sustain the ongoing clearing of drainage channels, while urging residents, traders and transport operators to embrace proper waste disposal habits and avoid dumping refuse into drainage systems, stressing that collective responsibility is necessary to protect public infrastructure.
