The fight against tuberculosis (TB) received a major boost in Mushin on Thursday, 16 July 2026 as the wives of councillors and other female councilors were officially decorated as STOP TB Ambassadors, taking the campaign against the deadly disease directly to communities across the local government.

The colourful investiture ceremony, held at the Mushin Local Government Secretariat, Palm Avenue, was jointly led by the representative of the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs Ronke Solomon, wife of the distinguished Senator Ganiu Olarewaju Solomon- the political Apex leader in Mushin and Odi-olowo Ojuwoye and a member of the APC Lagos State Governance Advisory Council, also the Mushin first lady, Wife of the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Mrs. Olufunke Aruwe, who described the initiative as a bold step towards protecting lives through grassroots health advocacy.

Representing the Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Mrs Solomon urged residents not to ignore persistent coughs and other symptoms associated with tuberculosis, stressing that early diagnosis and treatment remain the surest way to defeat the disease.

She listed prolonged cough lasting 2 weeks or more, chest pain, coughing up blood or mucus, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness as warning signs that require immediate medical attention.

Mrs. Aruwe charged the newly decorated ambassadors to become frontline advocates in their respective wards by educating residents on TB prevention, encouraging early testing and treatment, and helping to eliminate the stigma that often discourages people from seeking medical care.

She said the initiative would strengthen community participation in the fight against tuberculosis while supporting ongoing efforts to reduce the disease burden across Mushin.

"The responsibility before you goes beyond this decoration. You must take the message of TB awareness to every household, encourage early diagnosis, support those undergoing treatment, and help save lives," she said.

The event attracted top government officials and health stakeholders, including the Vice Chairman of Isolo LCDA, Hon. Idowu Jaraola; Secretary to the Local Government, Mrs. Basirat Mohammed Yusuf; Council Manager, Mrs. Adepeju Ogidan; Wife of the Vice Chairman, Mrs. Idowu Karaole; Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kayode Odufuwa, councillors and their wives, supervisors, heads of departments, traditional leaders and other community stakeholders.

The newly inaugurated STOP TB Ambassadors are expected to lead awareness campaigns, mobilise residents for health education programmes and support efforts aimed at achieving a tuberculosis-free Mushin.

Speaking on behalf of the councillors wives, Hon. Olushoga Mondinat Abisola, Councilor representing Ward H, she promised that the task ahead of them will be adequately carried out by creating more awareness on the Tuberculosis and encourage residents to go for the free screening and treatment at their nearest primary health care centres, making the campaign successful.

The Medical Officer of Health of Mushin LGA, Dr. Odufuwa Kayode, made it known that anyone who observed that his or her cough persist more than two weeks should visit the nearest Primary Health Care nearest to them to receive the free medical screening and treatment because delay might be dangerous, making the case worse and deteriorate.

As part of the campaign, the dignitaries and quests walked the street of Palm Avenue to and fro, sensitising the people on the disease, distributing flyers and urged the people to go to any of the PHC around them for a free test and treatment.
